The idea came out of nowhere, and Severus was sure it was possibly the worst idea he'd ever had – including getting the Dark Mark branded on his arm.
He was going to ask Hermione to marry him.
This is a long, lovely slow burn that makes the most of the marriage law trope and keeps it in the realm of the realistic. Hermione here is a marvel—a mature version of the bright, inquisitve girl we see in canon. And Severus is a man obviously softened by both his experiences and by love, but he is still very much Snape, insecure about everything but his intellect, often grumpy and resentful, but able to grow.
