I admit to a weakness for epistolary fic and the opportunities it gives to let character and voice shine through without the intrusion of a narrator, and this story is exactly why. The wonderful layers of friendship and affection here are stunning. I'm utterly in love with both these ladies as dueltastic has drawn them--witty, wry, pragmatic and tough as nails, just as I imagine them. The movement from light-hearted banter to more sober observations of the changing situation to the overwhelming feeling of dread (knowing, as we readers do, what's coming) feels very natural and builds the tension right up to the conclusion so beautifully.
